religious freedom

Just read this letter send from my Senator Orrin Hatch. I hope whoever fills his shoes understands how important our religious freedoms are.

Dear Friend:

I thought you would be interested in an Amicus Brief I filed this week with a bi-partisan group of 34 senators in the U. S. Supreme Court regarding a landmark religious liberty case, Town of Greece v. Galloway. This case involves a recent ruling from the New York-based U. S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, finding that the Town of Greece, New York had violated the U. S. Constitution by allowing town board meetings to be opened with prayer. The ruling came even though the prayers were welcomed from members of any religion or denomination. It is expected the Supreme Court will hear this case in its upcoming term.

I feel very strongly about this issue and am disappointed that the Supreme Court has distorted the religion clauses of the First Amendment more than almost any other. Legislative prayers are as old as America and courts have no business regulating them. This case allows the Supreme Court to return to constitutional sanity on this issue.

The other Senators who joined in filing the brief include: Marco Rubio (R-FL), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), John Barrasso (R-WY), Roy Blunt (R-MO), John Boozman (R-AR), Richard Burr (R-NC), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Jeff Chiesa (R-NJ), Dan Coats (R-IN), Bob Corker (R-TN), John Cornyn (R-TX), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John Hoeven (R-ND), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Mike Johanns (R-NE), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Mike Lee (R-UT), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Rob Portman (R-OH), James Risch (R-ID), Pat Roberts (R-KS), Tim Scott (R-SC), John Thune (R-SD), Pat Toomey (R-PA), David Vitter (R-LA), Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Mary Landrieu (D-LA).

The amicus brief can be found here.

Utah was founded on the principle of religious freedom and I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that this important constitutional right is protected.

Sincerely,
Orrin Hatch
